How to use this tool
- Upload your photo by dropping it in or tapping the box.
- Choose a passport or visa preset, or type a custom width and height.
- Add a maximum size in KB if the form has a limit, then download the JPG.
US photo rules in short
- Square, 600 × 600 to 1200 × 1200 pixels, JPEG, 240 KB or less
- Head between 1 inch and 1⅜ inches (about 50–69% of the image height)
- Plain white or off-white background, no shadows
- Neutral expression, both eyes open, no glasses
- Taken in the last six months
The State Department also has its own photo tool, and the DS-160 checks your upload. If it is rejected, the usual reasons are shadows, glasses or a head that is too small in the frame. Always check the official rules before submitting.
