Which format should you choose?
JPG is the most widely accepted format for photos. Use it for upload forms, email and printing. It doesn't support transparency.
PNG keeps every pixel exactly and supports transparent backgrounds, so it suits logos, screenshots and graphics with text. Photo files in PNG are much larger.
WebP is a modern format from Google that makes files 25–35% smaller than JPG at the same quality. All current browsers support it, but some older apps and government forms don't.
Why a WebP image won't open
Images saved from websites are often WebP, and older software may refuse them. Convert WebP to JPG or PNG here and the file will open almost anywhere.
HEIC photos from iPhone
iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. Safari on Mac and iPhone can open HEIC, so this converter can turn them into JPG when used in Safari. Other browsers can't read HEIC yet. You can also set your iPhone to save as JPG under Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible.
