What HEIC is

Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos in HEIC (High Efficiency Image Format), which takes about half the space of JPG. Windows, many websites and most government forms don't accept it, so photos need converting before upload.

Other quick fixes

When you email photos from the iPhone Photos app or AirDrop them to a non-Apple device, iOS often converts them to JPG automatically. On a Mac, you can also open the photo in Preview and choose File → Export → JPEG.

Frequently asked questions

Chrome and Edge don't support HEIC yet. Use Safari on iPhone, iPad or Mac.

How do I make my iPhone take JPG photos?

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

Very slightly at 90% quality; it's not usually visible.
