Common conversions

India Standard Time (IST) is UTC+05:30 all year. In winter, New York runs on EST (UTC−05:00), so India is 10 hours 30 minutes ahead. In summer, New York switches to EDT (UTC−04:00) and the gap shrinks to 9 hours 30 minutes. London is 5 hours 30 minutes behind India in winter (GMT) and 4 hours 30 minutes behind in summer (BST). Los Angeles is 13 hours 30 minutes behind India in winter and 12 hours 30 minutes in summer.

Why daylight saving makes this confusing

The US and UK both move their clocks forward in spring and back in autumn, but not on the same dates. The US changes on the second Sunday in March and the first Sunday in November. The UK changes on the last Sunday in March and October. For a few weeks each year the gap between New York and London is four hours instead of five. India and Pakistan don't use daylight saving, so their offsets never change.

Scheduling across countries

For a call between the US East Coast, the UK and India, early morning in New York (around 8–9 am) lands in the UK afternoon and the Indian evening. This table makes it easy to test a few times before sending an invite.
