How weighted grades work

Most US and UK courses don't treat every mark equally. A syllabus might say homework is 20%, quizzes 10%, the midterm 30% and the final 40%. Each score is multiplied by its weight, the results are added up and divided by the total weight entered so far. That gives your grade on the work completed.

The final exam formula

If your current grade is G, the final is worth F (as a decimal) and you want to finish with T, the score you need is (T − G × (1 − F)) ÷ F. With a current 76% and a final worth 40%, reaching 80% needs (80 − 76 × 0.6) ÷ 0.4 = 86%.

Letter grades

The calculator uses a common US scale: 93+ is an A, 90–92 an A−, 87–89 a B+ and so on down to below 60 as an F. Schools differ, so check your own grading policy. For your overall GPA across courses, use the GPA calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my grade with weights?

Multiply each score by its weight, add them up and divide by the total weight.

What do I need on my final to get an A?

Enter 93 (or your school's A cut-off) as the target and the final's weight; the calculator shows the score needed.

What if the weights don't add up to 100?

That's fine for a grade so far. The calculator divides by the weight you've entered.

Is 79.5% a B or a C?

It depends on your school's rounding policy. Many round 79.5 up to 80.
