The 4.0 grade scale
| Letter | Points | Letter | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A / A+ | 4.0 | C+ | 2.3 |
| A− | 3.7 | C | 2.0 |
| B+ | 3.3 | C− | 1.7 |
| B | 3.0 | D+ | 1.3 |
| B− | 2.7 | D | 1.0 |
| F | 0.0 | ||
Some colleges give A+ a value of 4.3, and high schools often add a point for honours or AP classes (a weighted GPA). Check your school's handbook if precision matters.
Cumulative GPA
To combine semesters, add all quality points from every semester and divide by all credits. Don't average the semester GPAs, because semesters with more credits should count for more.
CGPA to percentage in India
CBSE states that an approximate percentage can be found by multiplying CGPA by 9.5. Many universities use their own formula, often printed on the back of the marksheet, so use that where it exists.
To work out a single course grade, or the score you need on a final exam, use the grade calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each grade's points by the course credits, add them up and divide by total credits.
Is a 3.5 GPA good?
Yes. On a 4.0 scale it is roughly a B+/A− average and meets many graduate school cut-offs.
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
For CBSE, multiply CGPA by 9.5. For example, 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8%.
Do pass/fail courses count?
Usually not. They earn credit but are left out of the GPA.
