Typical reference ranges
| Platelet count | Per µL (/cumm) | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Above 450 ×10⁹/L | Above 450,000 | High (thrombocytosis) |
| 150–450 ×10⁹/L | 150,000–450,000 | Normal range |
| 100–149 ×10⁹/L | 100,000–149,000 | Mildly low |
| 50–99 ×10⁹/L | 50,000–99,000 | Moderately low |
| 20–49 ×10⁹/L | 20,000–49,000 | Severely low: higher bleeding risk |
| Below 20 ×10⁹/L | Below 20,000 | Very low: urgent review |

Use your own lab's range. Reference ranges differ between labs, analysers and methods, and with age, sex and pregnancy. The range printed on your report takes priority over the figures here.
Check your value

Common causes of low platelets
- Viral infections, especially dengue, and also malaria and typhoid in endemic areas
- Some medicines, including heparin, certain antibiotics and anti-epileptic drugs
- Liver disease, where the spleen holds on to platelets
- Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), where the immune system destroys platelets
- Pregnancy (mild drops are common late in pregnancy)
- Bone marrow problems and vitamin B12 or folate deficiency
A falsely low count (pseudothrombocytopenia) happens when platelets clump in the sample tube. If the result doesn't fit how you feel, labs often repeat it in a different tube or check a blood film.
Platelets in dengue
In dengue the fever usually lasts 2–7 days. The critical phase starts when the fever settles and typically lasts 24–48 hours (CDC); this is when platelets are often lowest and complications appear, before the count recovers. The platelet count alone does not decide treatment: doctors also watch hematocrit, blood pressure and warning signs such as severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, bleeding and drowsiness. The WHO advises paracetamol for pain and fever and avoiding ibuprofen and aspirin, which raise bleeding risk.
Common causes of high platelets
Most high counts are reactive: infection, inflammation, iron deficiency, recent surgery or after removal of the spleen. Persistently very high counts without a clear reason can come from a bone marrow condition and need specialist review.
Frequently asked questions
What platelet count is dangerous?
Below about 20,000/cumm (20 ×10⁹/L) carries a risk of spontaneous bleeding and needs urgent review. Below 50,000 bleeding risk rises with injury or surgery.
What is the normal platelet count in lakh?
1.5 to 4.5 lakh per cumm.
Do papaya leaves raise platelets in dengue?
Some small studies suggest a modest effect, but evidence is limited. They are not a substitute for medical monitoring.
Can stress or exercise change the count?
Hard exercise can raise platelets slightly for a short time. It does not explain a low count.
