How fancy fonts work
Instagram, TikTok and WhatsApp don't let you change fonts. These styles aren't really fonts at all: each letter is swapped for a different Unicode character that looks like a styled letter. Unicode includes complete bold, italic, script, fraktur and double-struck alphabets originally made for mathematics, so the text pastes anywhere that accepts normal text.
Where they work
Bios, captions, comments, display names, gaming names and messages on most modern phones. Older devices may show empty boxes for characters they don't support. Upside-down and strikethrough styles use combining marks and may look slightly different between apps.
Use them sparingly
Screen readers used by blind and partially sighted people may read styled letters one by one or skip them, and search inside apps may not match them. Use fancy text for a name or a short highlight, and keep important details such as phone numbers and links in plain text. To check a caption's length first, use the word counter.
