How to use this tool

  1. Choose whether you are adding tax to a price or removing it from a total.
  2. Pick a preset (UK VAT, India GST or a US state) or type your own rate.
  3. Read the net price, tax amount and total. For GST the CGST/SGST split is shown.

Which rate applies

Most goods and services in the UK are standard-rated at 20%. The reduced 5% rate covers things like domestic energy and children's car seats, and zero-rated items include most food and children's clothing. HMRC lists the rate for each type of product.

On an invoice

A VAT invoice should show the net price, the VAT rate, the VAT amount and the total, along with your VAT registration number.
